The New Time Management: Multiplier Thinking

At the heart of Paradigm Sample's brand promise lies a strong commitment to aiding clients in making the most of their time. Time, an ephemeral and priceless resource, vanishes without a trace once gone. Our focal point at Paradigm Sample is crystal clear: to be a dependable source of assistance for clients, steering them away from insignificant or unproductive activities that do not enrich their growth or well-being.

The concept of time management is misleading. We can't truly manage time because it keeps moving forward regardless of our preferences. So, the truth is, there's no such thing as time management. What truly exists is self-management. It's about how we manage ourselves, our emotions, and our choices in relation to time.

It is impossible to create more time within a single day. To overcome this, we need to shift our focus towards the future and embrace the fundamental principle of multiplying time, as described in Rory Vaden’s book, Procrastinate on Purpose.

Multiplying time involves granting oneself the emotional permission to invest time in activities today that will yield more time tomorrow. By dedicating time to tasks that generate more time in the future, we effectively multiply our available time. This change in perspective has the potential to bring about transformative effects in our lives.

What is Multiplier Thinking?

While many people base their decisions on urgency and importance, multipliers take a different approach by considering a third factor: significance. If urgency refers to how soon something matters and importance relates to how much it matters, significance focuses on how long it will matter.

In the context of a modern-day to-do list, a commonly used strategy or tool, individuals often ask themselves, "What is the most important thing I can do today?" However, multipliers approach it differently. They ask themselves, "What can I do right now that would make the future better?" They prioritize tasks based on their significance, considering their long-term impact and benefits. By making the significance calculation, multipliers aim to create a positive impact on the future rather than solely focusing on immediate tasks. The Focus FunnelThe Focus Funnel offers a visual representation of the thinking process used by multipliers, to allocate their time effectively. It explains why some individuals achieve extraordinary, exponential results while others progress linearly.

In the Focus Funnel, all tasks enter the top.

  • The first question a multiplier asks is, "Can I eliminate this task? Is it truly worth doing?"

They give themselves permission to disregard certain tasks, knowing that saying "no" today creates more time for tomorrow. Effective time management involves choices of what not to do, not just what to do.

  • If a task cannot be eliminated, the next question is, "Can I automate it?

Creating processes for tasks today saves time in the future. Automation acts similarly to compounding interest, turning time into more time. Multipliers view time as wealthy individuals view money and invest time and energy to automate processes.

  • If a task cannot be automated, the next question is whether it can be delegated.

When we adopt a long-term perspective, almost anything can be delegated, as we come to understand that others have the potential to learn and master tasks just as we did. Embracing the significance of this idea plays a transformative role in multiplying our time, empowering us to let go of perfectionism and allow others the space to grow and develop their skills over time.

  • When a task cannot be eliminated, automated, or delegated, the remaining consideration is whether to address it immediately or postpone it for later.

If the task demands immediate attention, we concentrate on it, granting ourselves the permission to focus and remove distractions.

If we determine that the task can wait, we apply a concept called "procrastinate on purpose." This doesn't mean indefinitely delaying the task but placing it back at the top of the funnel. It enters a holding pattern and cycles through the focus funnel until one of the other strategies becomes more relevant and is implemented.

More Tips to Achieve Effective Time Management

To achieve effective time management, there are several strategies you can implement:

  1. Learning: Set aside dedicated time for learning new skills, acquiring knowledge, or becoming an expert in a specific area. This investment in self-improvement will enhance your productivity and efficiency in the future, ultimately saving you time in the long run.
  1. Automation and Technology: Explore automation tools or technology solutions that can streamline repetitive tasks or simplify complex processes. By investing time in setting up automation workflows or adopting time-saving tools, you can significantly increase your efficiency and save valuable time in the future.
  1. Building Relationships: Allocate time to nurture and build relationships with colleagues, clients, or mentors. Strong relationships foster collaboration, support, and shared knowledge, helping you accomplish tasks more efficiently and overcome unnecessary obstacles.
  1. Health and Well-Being: Prioritize self-care activities such as exercise, meditation, and getting sufficient sleep. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being boosts your energy levels, improves focus and concentration, and ultimately allows you to make the most of your available time.

By implementing these strategies, you can optimize your time management skills and make better use of the time you have, leading to increased productivity and overall satisfaction.
